In this study, research was carried out to determine the efficiency of nanofluids as unconventional heat transfer fluids in solar collectors in a country with as much thermal potential as Panama. After doing preliminary research on four possible heat transfer fluids, we found that CuO, Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 nanofluids with water as the base fluid have thermal properties of great interest. Afterwards, the simulation of a simple solar collector system was carried out through the TRNSYS software using the climatic conditions of Panama. A counter flow heat exchanger was used to supply the domestic hot water to a standard residence of four people, where each one consumes fifty liters of water per day. It was possible to verify that nanofluids are more efficient heat transfer fluids than the conventional fluid (water), with SiO2 being the best nanofluid when choosing the heat exchanger to be used; therefore, these unconventional heat transfer fluids could be possible substitutes for new collectors in the future.en-US
